As many gun enthusiasts know, this now famous bottom ejecting five-shot pump gun was a John Browning 1915 patent later improved by John Pedersen. The Model 17 is revered for innovative design and proven success in the field based upon ease of carry and reliable performance. More than 73,000 models were produced from 1921 to 1933. We do not sell Model 17’s that have been modified from the original specifications. Many fine examples of these guns are still available and are highly sought after for shooting in the field, or simply collecting for their superior design, fit, and finish.
Sadly, many Model 17’s have been modified by the addition of polychokes, shortened stocks, recoil pads, or by inexperienced disassembly. We do nor sell Model 17’s that have been altered. Occasionally, we will offer, or purchase such guns for parts only. Many 17’s appear in the market place with alterations concealed. The barrel of a 17 must be 24, 26, 28, 30, or 32 inches to be original. The serial number on the barrel and the receiver MUST match. Barrels are NOT interchangeable. Mismatched barrels and receivers are dangerous and should never be fired or offered for sale. One weak point in the Model 17 has been cracks in the stock where it meets the receiver. Repairs here make the gun worthless in our opinion and a new stock should be installed. Likewise, gouged screws drastically reduce the value of the gun. The choke of the 17 is stamped on the barrel. However, the actual measured choke may be different. Buyers should be alert and require that chokes be measured with a choke gauge prior to purchase.
We are always interested in learning more about pump shotguns, especially the Model 17.
